I worked with Randi extensively during my 6+ tenure as President and Vice President for the Bay Village Neighborhood Association, a civic organization in a centrally located historic district in Boston.

Despite Bay Village’s small size, it’s central location meant we were (and are) constantly buffeted by planning for projects in and around our neighborhood. Randi always stood out for her ability to listen and to frame concerns we voiced in a constructive fashion. “Translating” between resident interest and organizational intention takes a good ear, parsing out meaningful information from what often sounds a blizzard of noise to all sides in a project, and the ability to find meaningful, productive compromises for the residents and for the City as whole.

Her skill in this regard is exceptional. We didn’t always see eye to eye (and in urban real estate projects, it’s probably impossible to get all parties to agree on everything), but you always knew Randi understood and made sure neighborhood concerns were addressed openly.

If you know Randi’s well-established reputation as an individual who helped revitalize her own neighborhood as Boston “grew up”, this ability to gather and frame resident concerns and development makes perfect sense: she’s lived the battles herself. It would be hard to find someone better versed or better skilled at moving projects ahead thanks to her well-deserved reputation for sensitivity to resident concerns as urban design challenges are faced. 

Randi is great fun to work with because she understands people’s goals and gets things done. I got to know her when she was the Washington St., Main Street maven, and I was working on a community project. Randi is a go-to person for knowledge of the community, the city and government. We next worked together at the then-Boston Redevelopment Authority, where are her knowledge of the community and her skills at reaching out to the community and building trust were the best in the house! Randi is effective, wise and creative – A great partner! 

In the creation and establishment of Back Deck in downtown Boston, Randi was very helpful and instrumental in suggesting potential locations, recommending financing sources, and providing permitting and licensing support.

Every time I would ask for advice from Randi about a project in the City of Boston, she provided honest, direct and succinct information. No wasting time or dollars. Enthusiastic encouragement where and when it was needed, but Randi was swift to discount unreasonable construction projects. Sat on a retail trade industry organizing committee in Boston with Randi for several years running organizing program components for a conference attended by more than 1,300 shopping center and retail developers.
